Up Options explained Bit Rate (Mbps) File Sizes & Formats Video FAQ Video Glossary

DVD Production and more...

Data Bit Rate determines the encoding quality during video capture. The higher the bit rate, the higher the quality, but also the larger the file size. This is where the compromise can arise, storage capacity vs. video quality. If the storage device is to be a PC or DVDs, then the default 4Mbps capture rate will give good quality video. If space is limited, reduce the rate accordingly or if space is not an issue and quality is, consider the higher rates available from Premium Capture.

Premium Capture is for the ultimate in video quality. The capture bit rate can be increased to 6 or 8 Mbps for the maximum data rates achievable and comparable with Commercial DVD productions. Please see our notes on Bit Rate to understand if it is appropriate for your source material. I.e. a lower quality source may not benefit from the Premium Capture service.

VCD / DVD Production allows you to view your captured video on a DVD player. Included in this option are regular 5 minute chapters for easy navigation through the video. This can also be upgraded to Natural Chapters whereby breaks and animated menus are added at natural scene changes (as specified by yourself). This option can also be further complimented by a Presentation DVD case & cover with typical photos taken from the video including printed Titles and Chapters.

Encoding Format depends on your target media. MPEG2 is the default format and is compatible with all PCs, DVD productions and Personal Media Players. MPEG1 is used only for VCD production which is essentially obsolete now. MPEG4/MP4 is the most recent format adopted by 5th Generation iPod, Creative ZEN Vision, etc.. This is the 2nd format in our Dual Format option offering significantly reduced file sizes and hence greater capacity for video storage on these portable devices.

Dual Format. Take the trouble out of recoding you newly digitized videos for your iPod or Zen and allow Multimedia Convert to do it for you. Specify this option and your videos will be generated in both MPEG2 and MPEG4. One excellent quality for your Home Media Server where storage space is not a concern but quality reproduction is. Then a MP4 copy ready for your portable media players where capacity is limited and quality can be set to match the player. We can calculate the highest possible Bit Rate available, given the collection size and player capacity. All MP4 bit rates are included in the option.

2nd TV Standard allows your DVD productions to be played in foreign lands. Request this option if you want copies to send to relatives in the USA etc..

Which options to use?

MPEG2 3Mbps & above!  We highly recommend using the MPEG2 format with a bit rate of 3Mbps or above. Our default is 4Mbps MPEG2 delivering comparable quality to S-VHS / Hi8. For a portable device, go for Dual Format, recoding to at least 500kbps MPEG4 giving a good compromise between quality / file size, and leaving space for photos and music files as well.
